Project Girl Code - Rotaract Club of Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines
Project Girl Code aims to target 13-16 year old girls in disadvantaged situations and expose them to the world of technology through an introductory course in coding.
Girls in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are not ordinarily exposed to critical thinking skills within their curriculum. Coding provides an interactive environment where girls can learn by doing. It poses many benefits including the development of problem-solving skills. It also encourages a healthy and fun relationship with mathematics and computational thinking, the process stimulates creativity through the creation of something from 'nothing'. All of these can prove beneficial to all girls, especially the targeted group.
Project Girl Code was the result of a Project Fair held early in 2022, affording the Rotaract Club Of Kingstown the opportunity to support the empowerment of girls in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Grant funding was received from Rotary District 6600 to cover a majority of the cost and remaining funds were obtained from Rotary Club St. Vincent, Rotary Club St. Vincent South and the Rotaract Club of Kingstown. To reduce costs, drink sponsorship was obtained from the St. Vincent Brewery Limited, Eastern Caribbean Bottlers and Randy's Supermarket Ltd - each contributing one week's supply of drinks to the project.
