March 4th is World Obesity Day around the world – a unified day of action convened by the World Obesity Federation in collaboration with its global members that calls for a cohesive, cross-sector response to the obesity crisis.

Hundreds of individuals, organizations and alliances contribute to World Obesity Day every year, engaging hundreds of thousands of people across the world.

The Mission of World Obesity Day

  • INCREASE AWARENESS – Obesity is a disease. We are raising awareness and improving understanding of its root causes and the actions needed to address them.
  • ENCOURAGE ADVOCACY – Changing the way obesity is addressed across society, we’re encouraging people to become advocates, standing up and calling for change.
  • IMPROVE POLICIES – Creating a healthy environment that prioritizes obesity as a health issue, we’re working to change policy to build the right support systems for the future.
  • SHARE EXPERIENCES – Stronger together, we’re creating platforms to share experiences, inspiring and uniting a global community to work towards our common goal.

Take action on World Obesity Day

Obesity is a global problem, and it affects us all. 800 million of us are living with the disease, with millions more at risk.

Previous World Obesity Days have encouraged people to recognize the root causes of obesity, increase knowledge of the disease, tackle weight stigma and foreground the voices of people with lived experience.

For 2022, the focus is on the simple message that ‘Everybody Needs to Act’ to improve the world’s understanding, prevention and treatment of obesity.

The roots of obesity run deep, and the only way we can make progress is by working together. That is why action at the local, national, and global levels is being called on this year.

District 7030 World Obesity Day Webinar

With the 2022 World Obesity Day theme – “Everybody Needs To Act” –  and countries being called upon to work together for happier, healthier and longer lives for everybody, District 7030 Governor Sonya Alleyne took the opportunity to leverage the existing programs of the District and have our member countries and clubs “Get involved with World Obesity Day”!

Established in 2020, the long-term goal of Rotary District 7030's Childhood Obesity Prevention (COP) program is to promote, advocate and facilitate information and initiatives among clubs and communities  in the Caribbean in tackling childhood obesity. Thus, in January 2022, as part of its ongoing commitment to curbing and preventing childhood obesity, Rotary District 7030 launched its latest district initiatives and campaign – ‘7030 Moves for COP’.

As one of the campaign initiatives, District 7030 hosted a webinar on World Obesity Day – Friday 4th March 2022 at 12:00 p.m. AST – which focused on the importance of healthy living through proper diet and exercise and recognizing the levels of obesity throughout the Caribbean and among children in particular,. This webinar hosted the following key speakers and the discussion centered on the subject of public policy reform in the region and in the world when it comes to obesity prevention
  • Claudia Selin Batz - Policy and Projects Coordinator, World Obesity Federation
  • Dr. James Hospedales - Executive Director (Ret.), CARPHA
