During September, Rotary observes Basic Education and Literacy Month, inviting us to reflect on the millions of children and adults who still lack access to quality education. According to Rotary International, more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are unable to read and write—approximately 17 percent of the world’s adult population. Rotary is committed to strengthening communities’ capacity to support education, reducing gender disparities and increasing literacy among children and adults. Across Rotary District 7030, our Clubs serve diverse communities, each with its own educational needs and challenges. Some students require books, digital devices or safe learning spaces. Others need mentorship, additional teaching support or encouragement to remain in school. Adults may need literacy, language, financial literacy or digital-skills programmes that allow them to participate more fully in society and the economy.
Our response must therefore extend beyond donating books. I encourage every Rotary and Rotaract Club to engage educators, families and community leaders, understand the barriers affecting learning and develop sustainable solutions. We can strengthen school libraries, support teachers, establish reading and mentorship programmes, provide scholarships, promote early childhood education and create opportunities for lifelong learning.
Let us also remember that education must be inclusive. Girls and boys, people with disabilities, displaced families and those living in underserved communities must all have an equal opportunity to learn and thrive.
This month, I challenge every Club to identify at least one meaningful action that can strengthen education or literacy within its community. Share the impact of your projects so that others may learn from them, collaborate and help expand their reach.
When we help someone read, learn or develop a new skill, we do more than improve one life—we strengthen families, communities and future generations.
Let us DARE to confront educational inequality, INNOVATE in the way we support learning and SERVE with purpose. United, we are stronger, and through education, we can create lasting impact across District 7030.
