On Friday 14th June 2019, the Rotary Club of Sangre Grande (RCSG) held the finals and award ceremony for a Diabetes Awareness Programme, which was conducted for Primary schools, in the North Eastern Education District of Trinidad & Tobago, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education during the period, 1st May to 14th June 2019. The function was held at the SWAHA Hindu College and was chaired by Rotarian Sanjiv Boodhu.
 
The main objectives of the programme were to increase public awareness of Diabetes in the very young and to promote healthy lifestyles from as early as possible, hence the target group.

The programme was executed in 4 phases which involved meeting with Principals of the participating schools, power point presentation on Diabetes to Standard 3 children and their teachers and distribution of booklets. This was followed by a preliminary quiz, Artwork and Poetry competitions and the finals and award ceremony during which a final quiz was given, artwork and poems assessed and screening for Diabetes done by the Trinidad and Tobago Diabetes Association.

The resource persons were Dr Parbatie Siewdass, a certified Diabetes Educator and Lecturer at UWI, who prepared the slides for the power point presentation and the booklet, Dr Cyril Paltoo, Charter member of RCSG and medical Practitioner, Doctors from S/Grande hospital - Vedavid Mannick, Rajeev Ramnarine, Khateija Gowrie, Chris Gyan and Julian Gordon and Programme Coordinator, Past President, Dr. Balmattee Sukha.

Judges for Art and Poetry competitions were Kenneth Boodhu, President of the Rotary Club of Arima, Teachers Trevor Seunarine, Amitraj Ramnanan and Ms Shivana Ramchune.

All schools and finalists in the three categories received Certificates of Participation. the top three candidates received trophies and gifts and all finalists also received medals.
 
The results of the quiz and the quality of the artwork and poems were outstanding, giving the impression that the level of enthusiasm was tremendous even at this tender age, and all of the students and teachers involved were quite appreciative of the programme.
 
The results were as follows –
 
  • First, second and third place winners in the quiz competition -Naomi Cordice (Guaico Pres), Jhylani Pierre ( St Francis RC) and Elizabeth Ottley (Cunaripo Pres), respectively.
  • First, second and third place winners in the poem competition - Sapphire Figaro (S/Grande SDA), Lilly Ali (Sangre Chiquito Pres) and Elizabeth Ottley (Cunaripo Pres).
  • First , second and third place winners in the Art competition - Ezekias Rodriguez(Cunaripo Pres), Denika Jones (S/Grande SDA) and Caira Homeward (Matura Government).
 
Participating schools were –
CUNAPO (ST. FRANCIS) RC, CUNARIPO PRESBYTERIAN, CUMUTO PRESBYTERIAN, FISHING POND PRESBYTERIAN, GUAICO GOVERNMENT, GUAICO PRESBYTERIAN, MATURA GOVERNMENT, NORTH OROPOUCHE GOVEEDRNMENT, SANGRE CHIQUITO PRESBYTERIAN, SANGRE GRANDE GOVERNMENT, SANGRE GRANDE HINDU AND SANGRE GRANDE SDA.
