Building Bigger and Better Community Service Projects
As one of Rotary's Five Avenues of Service, Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to realistically serve the public interest. It is the opportunity Rotary clubs have to implement projects and activities that can benefit humanity whether on a small or large scale and whether locally, regionally or internationally. When Rotary is viewed as a positive force in the community, its membership strengthens and grows, adding to the organization's ability to serve.
For the 2026–2027 Rotary year, the District Community Service Committee is committed to strengthening sustainable service, improving community resilience, and creating measurable and lasting impact by focusing on assisting and supporting clubs in planning high-impact projects, promoting collaboration with national and regional stakeholders, as well as, developing performance indicators and reporting systems.
To help clubs get started with developing bigger and better community service projects which are both sustainable and impactful , here are three recommendations:
- Appoint a Club Community Service Chair – Each Rotary and Rotaract Club should
- Establish a club Community Service committee made up of passionate and active members
- Confirm a club Community Service chair (which may or may not be the same person serving as a club's Service Projects chair)
- Submit name and contact information to the relevant Assistant Governor
- Perform A Community Service Needs Assessment – As the basis for all major Community Service projects during the Rotary year, every club should commence a Needs Assessment to identify one or more significant community priorities and should involve community stakeholders such as
- Schools
- Health institutions
- Community groups
- Non-Governmental and/or Community-Based Organizations
- Local government where appropriate
- Identify One Major / Flagship Community Service Project – Each club should begin planning at least one measurable community service project that includes measurable outcomes and sustainability and which aligns with one or more of Rotary’s Areas of Focus and one or more of this year's program priorities in District 7030, for example:
- Physical and/or Mental Health
- Education
- Environment Sustainability
- Disaster Preparedness / Response
- Youth Development and Protection
- Economic Development
- Anti-Bullying
- Childhood Obesity Prevention
- Peace-Building and Conflict Resolution
