Basseterre, St. Kitts – On a warm, sunny Saturday morning members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) gathered to kick-off what is probably the Club's most heart-warming and rewarding project. Each year the Rotarians of RCL canvass the island and distribute Christmas hampers to some of the less fortunate persons and families in communities throughout the island of St. Kitts. 50 such hampers were distributed on Saturday December 21, 2013.

“It’s a joy for us to be able to share the Christmas cheer in this way and we certainly want to appeal to the community to continue to give us the support we need year by year,” President Archdeacon Valentine Hodge said.

Some of the items in the packages included: bath soaps, washrags, Vienna sausages, Ramen noodles, teabags, macaroni & cheese, toilet paper, sardines, toothbrushes, toothpaste, canned veggies, canned milk, rice, crackers, bananas, oranges and wheat rolls. Each person was also given a warm, ready-to-eat snack plate and a bottle of sorrel drink.

Before splitting into small caravans to deliver the Christmas hampers, the Rotarians journeyed to the Cardin Home and donated 2 standing fans and a case of bath soaps. The Cardin Home is a government institution that provides residential and nursing care for adults, mostly elderly, in St. Kitts.

Ten days later, RCL hosted its Annual New Year’s Charity Ball at the Carambola Beach Club. From the fireworks to the incredible cuisine served, the over 200 guests enjoyed themselves fully under the stars. The event was a tremendous success by all accounts. As the Club’s major fundraiser each year, the Charity Ball proceeds go toward funding the many RCL youth and community development projects throughout the Rotary year, including: the Primary School Spelling Bee, End Polio Now Campaign, National Heroes Day Luncheon for the elderly, Christmas Hamper Distribution Programme, Computer-Aided Literacy Solutions Programme and more.

It was indeed a great month of “Service Above Self” and certainly a December to remember.
