RC Paramaribo Residence: Go GLO 2020On 10th September, the Rotary Club of Paramaribo Residence held the 19th edition of its Go GLO event and achieved great success. GLO is a Dutch abbreviation for 'Normal Lower Education' which applies to primary or elementary schools. Go GLO is the club's yearly signature event where the top graduates from primary schools are honored and put into the spotlight. The event aims to encourage and motivate younger generations (8-12 years old) to do their very best at school. This year the event was made completely ‘Corona proof’ by organizing a drive-thru party for the graduates. A Go GLO event record of 301 participants passed by different “hotspots” where they received gifts, snacks, school supplies. The event was topped off with certificate presentations to students by the Minster of Education and Minister of Defence. The top 5 students for the year received special awards, as well as, recognition from the Minister of Education Ms Marie Levens. |

2020-2021 District Governor Message (September)My Rotary Family, we are already one sixth of the way through the Rotary year and it feels like just yesterday we were waking up to the start of the new year. In September, Rotary focuses on Basic Education and Literacy. Did you know that over 776 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate? While we in District 7030 open opportunities to support education, we should remember that this month's theme is also integral to our mission to promote peace in our District and our world. Remember that without basic education and literacy, poverty and inequality will persist, and with these conditions, peace cannot exist. |

Do More Than Ever Through Strategic PlanningRotary Club of Coppell, Texas, USA: The power of strategic planning was on display, and I could not have been more excited. It was a Saturday morning in February, before the pandemic forced us all into stay-at-home mode. I was facilitating the ninth-annual planning event for the Rotary Club of Park Cities, Texas, with 39 members in attendance for the half day session. They had signed up to craft strategic action plans for 2020-21, the third year of a three-year strategic plan. This was a quarter of their membership! Now, admittedly, social distancing has created some new challenges for all of us in planning. But as we have all seen and heard, there are some pretty awesome tools available to stay connected virtually. And as Rotary has much to give the world in these unprecedented times, the value of strategic planning is as critical as ever. It is in that spirit that I look back and share what we were able to accomplish, hoping to encourage other clubs to enhance their impact by doing the same. |

2020 DG Easter MessageFellow Rotarians,\ Chers Rotariens, Happy Easter to All! \ Joyeuses Pâques à tous!
I trust that you and your families are all well, and staying safe. We celebrate Easter, this year in very trying circumstances. But the Easter story of triumph over adversity teaches of us of the Christian faith to not despair; this too shall pass! As our risen Saviour rose triumphant from the death’s cold grasp, we will emerge from this pandemic. |

How Rotary Clubs Help Fight COVID-19 PandemicAs the COVID-19 pandemic spreads uncertainty and hardship around the world, Rotary members and participants are innovating, caring for those affected, and showing that even at a distance, there are ways to help. As people of action, Rotary members are engaged in their communities — gathering for projects and offering help to those in need. But in many areas, life is changing drastically. Health experts are urging people to maintain distance from others or even isolate themselves in order to slow the spread of the highly contagious virus. Fighting disease is one of Rotary’s main causes, so members already support efforts to promote proper hand washing techniques, teach people other ways to stay healthy, and supply training and vital medical equipment to health care providers. Now they’re helping health authorities communicate lifesaving information about COVID-19 and donating protective gear and other supplies to clinics and hospitals that are under strain because of the pandemic. |

2019-2020 District 7030 Diabetes ProjectOne of the two special projects that DG Trevor is focusing on in this Rotary year is the Prevention and Management of Diabetes. It is our hope that your club will see it possible to adopt this project. In the 2010-2011 Rotary year, our District was involved in such a project and more than 40 clubs participated. Since the late 1960's we have witnessed a transition from a disease pattern dominated by infectious diseases to one in which chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is out front. Diabetes is one of the leading NCDs. Diabetes is best defined as a group of disorders characterized by reduced secretion of or altered sensitivity to insulin with sustained elevation of blood glucose levels. Diabetes is associated with long term damage, dysfunction and failure of organs, especially eyes, kidneys, blood vessels of the heart, brain and limbs. The primary causes are dietary change and reduced activity.

Staying Connected In A CrisisFor many of us, our Rotary family is an important part of our lives. These friendships connect us to our communities and the world and provide avenues of soul-enriching service. All over the Caribbean...all over the world, we currently find ourselves in unprecedented times that test our ability to stay connected. None of us could have foreseen these extraordinary circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus. Rotary clubs everywhere are wrestling with the question, How do we maintain membership engagement during the pandemic? This unique situation requires an unusual amount of adaptability, creativity and innovation from both clubs and Rotarians. Most, if not all, clubs in District 7030 (and around the world) have canceled in-person meetings, following the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as, local and regional heath authorities, to maintain and emphasize the need for social distancing. But that does not mean we have to give up on regular fellowship opportunities. Several of our clubs have already met this week virtually. Read more to find out some ways to engage members during these extraordinary times. Remember: Nothing beats the personal touch!

DISTRICT 7030 RESPONSE TO COVID-192020-03-16: Fellow Rotarians – You would all be aware of the dreaded coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and have noted that cases have surfaced in most of the countries/territories of our District. You would have all also seen in the media how the virus has spread across Europe and more recently, the US, and how these countries with relatively strong and resilient health systems have been struggling to cope with the outbreak. The health systems in most, if not all, parts of our District can be considered fragile, at least in comparison to those in Europe and North America. Few are equipped to deal with an outbreak on the scale of what we have seen in other countries. We must, therefore, individually and collectively take such measures that would retard the rampant transmission in our own communities.

I wish to assure all that the District Leadership also considers the health and safety of our members and their families to be paramount, and that would do nothing to endanger our individual and/or collective well-being. |

Rotary Celebrates 115th Anniversary MilestoneThe year 2020 marks the 115th anniversary of the world’s first Rotary meeting. On 23rd February in 1905, four individuals, each of a different background and different vocation met for dinner in the spirit of friendship and fellowship. While no one knows exactly what went on at that meeting — little did Paul Harris and his three friends realize as well what they were starting in room 711 of the Unity Building in Chicago — but within 2 years, Rotary began to change the world by becoming the world’s first service club. Over the last 115 years, it is almost unbelievable how much Rotary has accomplished in its six areas of focus – promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, child and maternal health, education, and local economic development. While we have come a long way, it is important to remember that we still have a long way to go to achieve goodwill, peace and understanding among all the people of the world. The Board of Directors of Rotary International asked that all Rotary Clubs plan programs and take on special activities to emphasize understanding and goodwill as key components of world peace and that the month of February (which is also RI's Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month) is a chance for every club and rotarian to pause, plan and promote Rotary's Fourth tenet. Here's a look at what some clubs in District 7030 have been doing this month in recognition of this milestone...

Membership Month"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision, the ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results." -- Andrew Carnegie This is our same truth in Rotary, where we accomplish the impossible every day through the dedication and drive of our membership. As a past Rotaractor and relatively new Rotarian, what first attracted me to the Rotary family was the infectious way in which our organization accomplished so much for others while having fun! This fellowship was definitely the hook that brought me into Rotaract but it was our organization’s commitment to community service which anchored my position here for the last 12 years and counting. |

How To Improve Your Photography: Telling Rotary’s Story In PicturesOver the last year, there have been many stories highlighting club projects in Nassau, Bahamas, and Seattle, Washington, USA. Each project demonstrates how Rotarians take action to solve problems in their own communities. These type of projects translate well into visual storytelling content. A good approach to photography remains consistent with the Rotary brand - one that strives to make authentic images that represent the values and personality of Rotary. Because of this, appealing images are created and tell a bigger story – one that reflects the projects and people who make the world a better place. |

History of Our DistrictIn order to set the stage for the history of District 7030, I have taken the liberty of venturing even further back in time, to the origins of Rotary in the Caribbean. Rotary was present in Cuba from 1916 to 1979 when it was suspended. Cuba was the host Country for the 1940 Rotary International Convention. By 1957 Cuba had 58 Rotary Clubs with 1,800 members. For the fascinating history of Rotary in Cuba and by extension, the Caribbean, go to: https://www.rghfhome.org/first100/global/southamerica/havana/history.htm |

Rotary Club of Port of SpainRotary Club of Port of Spain Report on Media Covered Event Date: March 13th 2018 Location: Goodwill Industries, Port of Spain (Regular meeting place of RCPOS) Meeting Topic: Media launch of ‘Rotary Games’ Details: The Rotary Club of Port of Spain (RCPOS), in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, hosts an annual athletics meet for students of Primary Schools in the Port of Spain educational district. This year was RCPOS’s 30th anniversary of hosting the games. Many national level athletes were scouted at these games over the years including Olympians Michelle Lee-Ahye and Jehue Gordon. Prior to the games, RCPOS hosts a media launch to introduce the games to the media to help drive coverage of the actual event and to raise awareness of the young athletes of our community and the country. At this year’s launch, hosted during our weekly luncheon at Goodwill Industries, RCPOS had media from many of Trinidad’s media houses including the Guardian Media Group and Newsday newspapers. RCPOS spoke extensively at this event about the Club’s longstanding relationship with the games and the role that athletics plays in shaping the young persons of the country. We also spoke about Rotary as a whole and explained some of the Rotary traditions for our sponsors and media in attendance. The event and the games themselves generated significant press coverage in Trinidad’s 3 daily newspapers. Examples of this coverage can be found below. |

St. Augustine Rotary club makes hearts beat |

Rotary aid for heart patientsRotary aid for heart patientsTHE Rotary Club of St Augustine has saved the lives of more than 1,200 heart patients in TT over the past 32 years, says immediate past president Gary Williams. Of that figure, he said, 549 of those medical cases were attended to between July 2016 and July 2017, under the banner of the club’s two flagship projects: the Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) and Heart Beat International Trinidad and Tobago (HBITT ). While both projects sourced pacemakers from manufacturers across the globe at no cost, the Heart Beat International initiative also secured the services of surgeons pro-bono, said a media release. Williams recently disclosed this success at the 49th Handing Over Ceremony to mark the 2017-2018 Rotary term at the Teaching and Learning Centre, The University of the West Indies, St Augustine. “From inception in 1985 to 2017 altogether 1,500 lives have been saved in TT alone; whilst another 1,594 devices have been distributed to other HBI Heart Centres around the world in places like India, Philippines, Paraguay, Honduras and Dominican Republic. In effect our Rotary Club has saved 3,094 lives from 1985 to 2017,” Williams said while reporting on his 2016-2017 stewardship. The Heart Beat International initiative was a joint project with other organisations, inclusive of other Rotary Clubs. Williams, who has taken up the post of assistant district governor with responsibility for four clubs in east Trinidad, as well as those in Tobago. During the Rotary year 2016-2017, he said, the club combined with the individual efforts of members made donations to the Rotary Foundation estimated at more than US$9,000. Locally, donations were made to several causes including The Dyslexia Association the sponsoring of a teacher to become certified in diagnosing dyslexia. In the aftermath of tropical Storm Bret which caused flooding in several parts of Trinidad, the club rallied its members to assist the affected citizens in Caparo. The club then partnered with insurer Sagicor and the Rotary Club of Piarco to provide similar relief to the Piarco/St Helena community, and assisted similar efforts in south. In addressing the club’s future, Williams noted new members were being recruited through the Interact and Rotaract systems. Since 2003, the club has been sponsoring and supporting the Rotaract Club of St Augustine which caters for people ages 18- 30. In 2014, the club began supporting the Interact Club of St Augustine Girls’ High School which recruits member’s ages 12-18. |

Be the Inspiration2018-19 RI President Barry Rassin wants Rotary members to Be the InspirationBy Hank Sartin. Photos by Monika Lozinska Rotary International President-elect Barry Rassin laid out his vision for the future of the organization on Sunday, calling on leaders to work for a sustainable future and to inspire Rotarians and the community at large. Rassin, a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, unveiled the 2018-19 presidential theme, Be the Inspiration, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “I want you to inspire in your clubs, your Rotarians, that desire for something greater. The drive to do more, to be more, to create something that will live beyond each of us.” Rassin stressed the power of Rotary’s new vision statement, “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” This describes the Rotary that leaders must help build, he said. To achieve this vision, the president-elect said, Rotarians must take care of the organization: “We are a membership organization first. And if we want to be able to serve, if we want to succeed in our goals — we have to take care of our members first.” Rassin asked the incoming district governors to “inspire the club presidents, and the Rotarians in your districts, to want to change. To want to do more. To want to reach their own potential. It’s your job to motivate them — and help them find their own way forward.” Progress on polioRassin noted that one source of inspiration has been Rotary’s work to eradicate polio. He described the incredible progress made over the past three decades. In 1988, an estimated 350,000 people were paralyzed by the wild poliovirus; just 20 cases were reported in 2017 as of 27 December. “We are at an incredibly exciting time for polio eradication,” he said, “a point at which each new case of polio could very well be the last.” He emphasized that even when that last case of polio is recorded, the work won’t be finished. “Polio won’t be over, until the certifying commission says it’s over—when not one poliovirus has been found, in a river, in a sewer, or in a paralyzed child, for at least three years,” he said. “Until then, we have to keep doing everything we’re doing now.” He urged continued dedication to immunization and disease surveillance programs. Sustaining the environmentRotary has focused heavily on sustainability in its humanitarian work in recent years. Now, Rassin said, Rotarians must acknowledge some hard realities about pollution, environmental degradation, and climate change. He noted that 80 percent of his own country is within one meter of sea level. With sea levels projected to rise two meters by 2100, he said, “my country is going to be gone in 50 years, along with most of the islands in the Caribbean and coastal cities and low-lying areas all over the world.” Rassin urged leaders to look at all of Rotary’s service as part of a larger global system. He said that this means the incoming district governors must be an inspiration not only to clubs, but also to their communities. “We want the good we do to last. We want to make the world a better place. Not just here, not just for us, but everywhere, for everyone, for generations.” https://www.rotary.org/en/rotary-international-president-rassin-theme-2018 |

Fort De FranceInterview with WaddySowma, RI District 7030 Governor, from Rotary Club of Panamaribo Residence, Suriname. What is the outcome of your stay in Martinique? As Governor of district 7030, this includes the southern Caribbean from Antigua to Trinidad, French Guiana and Suriname, I had to visit the seven Rotary Clubs of Martinique, as well as the two Rotaract and Inner Wheel Clubs, with my efficient and remarkable assistant Thierry D' AbadiedeLurbe. I have reviewed their goals and objectives for the year to see if they are in agreement with Rotary International and the district, and provide advice and recommendations. And of course, for me this year, the added value of my visit to Martinique is the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Fort de France (hereafter called Dean)! It was the first French-speaking club in the Caribbean created in August 1957 and received its charter from the Rotary Club of Paris (the oldest club in France) and its bell from the Rotary Club of Hollywood in Florida. It was the island's only club for 13 years and then spread by sponsoring other Rotary Clubs and allowed the expansion of the Rotary family in Martinique, with theClub of Saint Pierre in 1970, then that of Fort de France Sud in 1975 etc.... It has been a driving force and continues to be very dynamic. We owe them the 60 years of Rotary presence in Martinique, which was the theme of last Saturday's gala evening in my honour. Each club has its own DNA, its own specificities. I've seen some very good service, and I've met many enthusiastic Rotarians, Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Rotaractors. I encouraged them to take advantage of the training and education offered by the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) so that they could perform even better and play a role in Martinique society and contribute funds to The Rotary Foundation, giving them more flexibility for their projects. With HervéHonoré, who is in charge of The Rotary Foundation in our district, I spent the entire day on Saturday in Dominica with our Rotarian friends there and met with Prime Minister Skerrit to discuss medium- and long-term reconstruction projects with him. There is a lot to do and the situation is disastrous. We will play our full part in the reconstruction efforts. First of all, we must identify the projects that we will be able to support effectively. What can you tell us about the Rotary Club of Fort de France (dean) after your second visit to this club in 8 days? It's an underage club: 60 years old! Very proactive, I told them: you're not close to retirement! You're 20 years old! I had the pleasure of meeting them, I felt "positive and inspiring waves" during my first visit last Monday at lunch and that's why I decided to go back there a second time before leaving. I wanted to show them my friendship. It is a club that has marked Rotary's history in Martinique with remarkable service projects. It is still in line with Rotary International's focus on service, empathy and friendliness. It is also online on the notion of leadership and knowledge promotion with conferences twice a month with very high level speakers from all spheres of society. It is a club that continues to play a major role in the public image of the district and Zone 34. For example, with Archbishop Monseigneur Macaire as an honorary member and with two of their future flagship projects on the occasion of their sixtieth anniversary: A 45-minute film about Rotary's 60th anniversary in Martinique, directed by one of their members Samuel Marie-Louise, was screened at a conference and debated in January. The film was given to the Rotary Club of Martinique to serve the Rotary community and beyond. Oh, that's wonderful. I think it's a great idea to work to promote Rotary. Fundraising for illiteracy with a VIP dictation to be given in the first quarter. Once again, the club always plays a very positive role in promoting the public image of Rotary in Martinique. And then I also noted its openness to the international scene with a willingness to continue twinning with other Rotary Clubs in Europe, North Africa, United States etc. and that's very positive! I wished them to remain as enterprising as ever and gave them an appointment in 60 years. |

why education changes the worldWhy education changes the world By Isma Seetal, Rotary Global Grant Scholar “Education is the best way to change one’s standard of living.” My mother would repeat this phrase over and over. I was lucky to have been brought up by a hard-working, single, mother, who empowered my brother and me to climb the socio-economic ladder by giving us the best education she possibly could. Other children from broken families like mine did not have the same fortune. My unwavering drive to give back and improve my community led me to join the Rotaract club of Port-Louis, Mauritius in July 2012. “Driiiing! Driiing!” My alarm rang out on a Saturday morning. My mind and body knew it was the weekend, and ganged up on me so that I had to crawl sluggishly out of bed. But the reason for my early wake-up soon dawned on me. It was the day of Lolo’s follow-up doctor’s appointment. Lolo is an eight-year-old boy, living in a poverty-stricken area of the island, whom I had met during a health-related Rotaract project. His mother was convinced that he was suffering from cognitive disabilities, which she blamed for his poor grades, and for the fact that he was constantly bullied at school. However, the diagnosis the doctor gave us that day was different from what the mother had thought: hearing impairment. Lolo was not mentally challenged. He just couldn’t hear properly! Many doctor appointments later, I visited Lolo. My heart filled up as he ran up to my friend and me, sporting the widest smile. Thanks to a hearing device, Lolo could now hear his teachers in class. He had changed from a sullen, withdrawn little boy, to a cheerful child with glowing and hopeful eyes. I discovered a passion: community service. I went on to become a Rotaract board member and then the president of the club in 2013-14. Through this project and many others, it became increasingly clear to me that the reason there were so many children roaming the streets was much more complex than I had thought. Some are the dropouts of an archaic education system, others are the victims of poverty and abuse, yet others are caught in their parents’ web of drugs and alcoholism. Back then, during one of the long discussions I had with my husband-to-be about the societal ills which continue to pervade our country, we came to one conclusion: we needed to build our skills and knowledge further to make a difference on an even larger scale. Though I am from a small island of 1.3 million, thanks to a Rotary global grant, I am now studying in California for a doctorate in Educational Leadership, gorging on new knowledge and making the best of the international exposure. I am delving more into educational reforms and the principles of leadership, and I am eager to return to my country to bring about positive changes in education. I continue to volunteer here for the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club, my hosts. The ties with Rotary are life-long! Long live Rotary! |

2017-2018 DG Message 2017-2018 DISTRICT 7030 GOVERNOR: WADDY SOWMA JULY 2017 Dear fellow Rotarians, At the beginning of a new year we like to look back at what the past year has brought us: being it lessons learned and our accomplishments. But also we like to look ahead: make new plans to reach new goals. The theme for 2017-18 is: Rotary: Making a Difference In the words of RI President Ian Riseley 17-18 we will answer the question “What is Rotary” with the theme Rotary: Making a Difference. “However each of us chooses to serve, we do it because we know our service makes a difference in the lives of others,….. we know that the work we do will change people’s lives- in ways large and small- for the better”. The best way we in District 7030 can give meaning to the theme of President Ian is by achieving the Presidential Citation and to focus on the District Goals. We have set District goals that are aligned with the Presidential Citation Goals. Our first priority is to build stronger clubs, with more members, that are engage and with more Rotary knowledge. Clubs which are vibrant and were we have fun; clubs which attract members but above all, retain members; Clubs which through their service show what Rotary is and that indeed Rotary is making a difference. Stronger clubs will lead to more humanitarian service, the second goal of the district. Not only more, but more high impact projects for the community, in cooperation with the community and sustained by the community. The 3rd goal is for the clubs to show the world our Rotary, our service to the community of which we believe will finally lead to peace. But by doing all this we must not forget the heart of our funding system: our one-hundred-year-old Rotary Foundation. I encourage you to contribute more than ever to the Rotary Foundation. You should know, we and I mean the clubs in District 7030, received 3 times more from TRF through grants than the amount we have contributed. In 2017-18: The focus of the District is EDUCATION Through education we can build a world where everyone is given equal opportunities. Education is an indispensable condition if we want to do away with the existing differences between social classes and genders. It opens a whole world of opportunities for the less fortunate so that they may have an equal shot at well-paying jobs. Through education we can help others realizing their dreams and build peace! Like the Chinese teacher and philosopher Confucius stated: “Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.” So for District 7030 we twisted the International Theme a little bit to reflect our focus: ROTARY: Making A Difference through EDUCATION Today as District Governor I pledge to all the clubs in D7030 being it Rotary, Rotaract, or Interact, my dedication and commitment to work with you. I strongly believe that only together, as a team, we can and will make a more impactful and sustainable difference in the lives of those we serve. My fellow Rotarians a happy and fruitful rotary year, let’s go to work and do what we do best ”Service above Self”. |

Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving. But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. Tapping Into Rotary’s Membership ResourcesDid you know that Rotary International receives inquiries from approximately 800-1,000 prospective members worldwide each week? RI gathers their information, forwards it to Rotary districts, and asks the districts to match the potential members with clubs. But only a few clubs used these leads to increase their membership in 2015-16. These prospective members are an untapped resource that can help clubs reach their membership goals this year.

Stand Up And Be An Ambassador For RotaryIt’s a new year, and here’s something you can resolve to do for your club and for Rotary in 2017...Think about the last time someone gave you a “word-of-mouth referral” that influenced your decision to do something. Maybe a friend shared a new favorite restaurant over Facebook, or your neighbor recommended a plumber. Or maybe it was that friendly suggestion to come along to a Rotary club meeting that got you involved in Rotary in the first place. Regardless, you probably acted on the referral, in part, because it came from someone you trust! If you’re passionate about Rotary, District 7030 encourages you this year to become an ambassador for your own club — and more importantly for Rotary — by using your “word-of-mouth referral” power.

2016 COL Decisions: A Quick Video ReviewThe 2016 Council on Legislation may well be remembered as one of the most progressive in Rotary history. Not only did this Council grant clubs more freedom in determining their meeting schedule and membership, it also approved an increase in per capita dues of $4 a year for three years. The increase will be used to enhance Rotary’s website, improve online tools, and add programs and services to help clubs increase membership. The RI Board put forth two proposals that increase flexibility. The first measure allows clubs to decide to vary their meeting times, whether to meet online or in person, and when to cancel a meeting, as long as they meet at least twice a month. The second allows clubs flexibility in choosing their membership rules and requirements. Both passed. Representatives also approved removing six membership criteria from the RI Constitution and replacing them with a simple requirement that a member be a person of good character who has a good reputation in their business or community and is willing to serve the community.

This project mainly targets primary schools rather than secondary schools, as there are competing interests such as football, cricket and extra academic lessons at the secondary school level. Some benefits of introducing chess in schools include helping students with fundamental subjects like Mathematics and English. It also helps children recognize patterns. Chess also builds crucial social skills such as, respecting authority, rules and each other. Although all students will want to win, there is always a loser, but loss should be accepted with grace, thus cultivating sportsmanship. However, the value of chess in schools in terms of these advantages is not widely recognized in Trinidad and Tobago or in the Caribbean as it is perhaps in developed countries.

RC Demerara: 2015-2016 Gender-Based Violence CampaignThe Rotary Club of Demerara under President Renata Chuck-A-Sang this year joined the campaign to end gender-based violence in Guyana. Domestic violence within the communities of Guyana has increased over the years, with statistics from the Guyana Police Force showing that domestic violence has also contributed to increases in overall national death tolls. The campaign focused on creating advocacy messages against domestic violence targeting both women and children, as well as, sharing with them that help can be accessed and directing them to where help can be accessed.

When Clara Montanez was a student, she never heard the word mentoring. The idea of having a role model help you pursue your ambitions was unfamiliar to her. "You basically chose your career based on personal interest and hoped you could find a job," says Montanez, senior director of investment for Oppenheimer & Co., Inc. "I went the route of getting married and having children first, and started my career later in life. I had no model for how to do that." That changed for Montanez the day a friend invited her to join Rotary.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the Adult Literacy Tutors Association, ALTA, founded in 1992 has pioneered and aggressively pursued the improvement in literacy levels in the country and the Caribbean. Their curriculum, material, and organization as a whole have received many prestigious awards for the quality, accountability and success it has delivered. There are 50 ALTA venues and anyone over the age of 16 years can enroll to receive free literacy classes.

RC Maracas/St. Joseph: Star DyslexiaDyslexia is a Specific Learning Difficulty disorder that affects an estimated 10% of the population. In Trinidad and Tobago, therefore, over 100,000 persons are living with dyslexia.
When DG Milton stated his desire to have District 7030 clubs focus on Dyslexia in 2015/2016, the Rotary club of Maracas/St. Joseph recognized that there was a huge vacuum to be filled in our local community. With the selfless input and generous guidance from the founder and chair of the Dyslexia association of Trinidad and Tobago, DATT, Cathryn Kelshall, we formulated a plan to incorporate sensitisation of our community alongside sponsorship of children for psychoeducational assessments and sponsorship of teachers for training in methods to teach children with dyslexia.

Rotary Has HeartThe 2016 Rotary Has Heart program is a Community Service Program which is a continuation from last year’s program, originally initiated by PRID Anne L. Matthews and expanded by DIR Robert Hall. Zones 33-34 want all of its approximately 1600 clubs in the 29 districts to do a community service project in the 1st quarter of 2016 and let the community be aware of what Rotary is doing. In so doing, we as Rotarians, can help those in need and improve Rotary’s image in each of our communities at the same time. The Rotary Foundation Trustees and RI Board consider this awareness a critical element in our membership strategy which is key to Rotary’s future. This is especially important in Zones 33-34. Therefore, publicity is a key requirement for Rotary Has Heart.

Maximizing Your Online PresenceOne of the most common areas of concern and, unfortunately, causes for some frustration in our District, deals with a Club's online presence. Some clubs are pretty adept at sharing their information and updates via the web and social media; while others find it hard to produce the information necessary or committ the time needed or sustain the personnel responsible.
Information provided here tackles how you can enhance your club (or district’s) online presence with topics ranging from "Why creating a digital communications strategy can help Rotary", to "How to get the most out of social media" and "Quick fixes to enhance your website".

Strengthening Rotary's ImageSheila Bethel
District 7020 Public Image Chair Zone 34 Assistant Rotary Public Image Coordinator For years, we described Rotary by the numbers: 1,220,115 members in 34,558 clubs in 200 countries and regions. Impressive figures, for sure, but they only tell part of our story. What numbers can't convey is the essence of Rotary –- what sets us apart and inspires people to get involved.

Eight Ways to Reduce the Cost of Rotary MembershipKen Solo
District Governor, 2015-2016
Rotary International District 7620 Growing the membership of your Rotary club is all about the value you provide for prospective members. The value equation is relatively simple and looks something like this: local and community service + networking and business development + professional growth and leadership opportunities + fellowship + fun / cost of membership = Value of Rotary. We tend to focus on the numerator in this equation all of the time. ( er…the numerator was all the stuff before the divisor “/” sign.) Today we are going to focus on the denominator, for the good reasons of 1) cost of membership is cold and lonely and we just don’t talk about it enough, and 2) it is the quickest way to improve the value equation.

A December to Remember for the Rotary Club of Liamuiga-Rty Cons A
Basseterre, St. Kitts – On a warm, sunny Saturday morning members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) gathered to kick-off what is probably the Club's most heart-warming and rewarding project. Each year the Rotarians of RCL canvass the island and distribute Christmas hampers to some of the less fortunate persons and families in communities throughout the island of St. Kitts. 50 such hampers were distributed on Saturday December 21, 2013.
“It’s a joy for us to be able to share the Christmas cheer in this way and we certainly want to appeal to the community to continue to give us the support we need year by year,” President Archdeacon Valentine Hodge said.
Some of the items in the packages included: bath soaps, washrags, Vienna sausages, Ramen noodles, teabags, macaroni & cheese, toilet paper, sardines, toothbrushes, toothpaste, canned veggies, canned milk, rice, crackers, bananas, oranges and wheat rolls. Each person was also given a warm, ready-to-eat snack plate and a bottle of sorrel drink.
Before splitting into small caravans to deliver the Christmas hampers, the Rotarians journeyed to the Cardin Home and donated 2 standing fans and a case of bath soaps. The Cardin Home is a government institution that provides residential and nursing care for adults, mostly elderly, in St. Kitts.
Ten days later, RCL hosted its Annual New Year’s Charity Ball at the Carambola Beach Club. From the fireworks to the incredible cuisine served, the over 200 guests enjoyed themselves fully under the stars. The event was a tremendous success by all accounts. As the Club’s major fundraiser each year, the Charity Ball proceeds go toward funding the many RCL youth and community development projects throughout the Rotary year, including: the Primary School Spelling Bee, End Polio Now Campaign, National Heroes Day Luncheon for the elderly, Christmas Hamper Distribution Programme, Computer-Aided Literacy Solutions Programme and more.
It was indeed a great month of “Service Above Self” and certainly a December to remember. |

Straight shooter / Un président simple et direct
Straight shooter With his congenial manner and his inclination to keep things simple, Ron Burton has a natural ability to put people at ease. But don’t let the easygoing demeanor of Rotary International’s new president lull you into thinking that he doesn’t get serious when it’s time for business. “If you ask my opinion, you’re going to get it,” Burton says, his neighborly look morphing into a solemn gaze. “When I feel strongly about something, I will argue like crazy for my position. I suppose that’s sort of an ego thing, but if I discern that someone has a vested interest or may be looking at a personal economic benefit, I have a simple suggestion: Apply The Four-Way Test.” |

THE FUTURE IS NOW ! / LE FUTUR C’EST MAINTENANT !THE FUTURE IS NOW ! When Clubs Delegates chosen me to be District Governor the 16th of April 2011, I didn’t think that I will be responsible of “Future Vision” Plan launch in our District 7030. We were successful in the first step: both District and all Clubs are certified! Now, we have to assist our communities by supporting clubs projects: the District Foundation Committee will have a fundamental role this year in the implementation of the new grants system. In addition of Rotary Foundation new process, we will have to success in a important work to have a transparent and comprehensive district: define Constitution and By-laws which the participation of any Rotarian in the District 7030. The objectives shared in Granada will allow clubs and district leaders to have a guideline for better visibility and more efficiency of action of Rotary International in the Southern Caribbean and the three Guianas. I thank each of you for the support that you have given me and for your commitment to serve above self. ENGAGE ROTARY, CHANGE LIVES !
District 7030 Conference in Grenada – 17 – 20 April 2013Grenada is hosting the conference in 2013 since the last one held here was in 1997 – over 15 years ago and it was time for Grenada to do so again. In 1988, 5 years after the Grenada Revolution, the first conference was hosted and it was deemed to be an outstanding success with 588 registered Rotarians and Partners in Service - then known as Rotary Anns. Grenada’s natural charm and eco –friendliness will provide the atmosphere to lure Rotarians and put them in the right frame of mind to focus on the RI theme – Peace Through Service. The conference centre will be at the Grenada Grand Beach Resort and Convention Centre. It is the same location where the previous two conferences were held but the current facilities are bigger and more modern than before. The theme is the same theme which was created by R.I. President Tanaka - PEACE THROUGH SERVICE - and we decided that our District Conference theme should reflect that of R.I.

RI President Tanaka Monthly Message - January, 2013 - Wear Your Rotary Pin!Dear fellow Rotarians,I am a Japanese businessman, and I wear a suit almost every day. The Rotary pin is always on my lapel. It is there because I am proud to be a Rotarian. Anywhere I go, people will see the pin and know who I am. Other Rotarians will see it and know that I am a friend, and people who are not Rotarians will see it as well. I want to be sure that all of them also understand the meaning of this pin. This is why I am asking all of you to wear your Rotary pin and to raise awareness of what the pin means. I believe having that pin on your lapel changes you. It makes you think more before you speak and before you act. It makes you remember, all the time, that you are a Rotarian – and that as Rotarians, we are here to help. |

President Banerjee June Message - Thank You for the Opportunity To ServeMy dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,June is a time to reflect on the Rotary year that has nearly passed, and to look forward to the one that is soon to begin. We look back at what we have accomplished and measure our progress toward the goals we have set for ourselves. In Rotary, we may pause to reflect, but never to rest on our laurels – for as much as we have achieved, we are always aware of how much there is still to do. |

District Conference Sets Sail
District 7030 is having its annual conference 2 - 7 April 2012. The conference this year will be held on board the cruise liner and is billed as a Rotary family experience since along with conference activities Rotarians will be able to visit the islands on the cruise itinerary and also get involved in all the extra curicular activies planned. This is a novel idea by DG Lara and everyone expects it to be hugely successful. Rotarians however, will participate in the annual PETS training followed by the conference activities which is normally an opportunity to showcase the work being done by Rotary in the District, prepare for the RI conference, recognize club projects and award Rotarians for their contribution to Rotary.

Rotary Recycling Project in Antigua Gets US$77K Funding from JapanThe Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown was recently successful in receiving a grant from the government of Japan under their Grassroots Human Assistance funding program to expand our waste recycling facility. The Signing Ceremony took place Thursday, February 9th, 2012 with officials of the Embassy of Japan and the government of Antigua and Barbuda in attendance. I am attaching a newspaper article covering the event and pictures for your information. I hope this can be put on the district website and/or newsletter. It is notable that this is the first such grant received by an NGO in Antigua from the government of Japan, and once again shows the potential for clubs in our district to access international donor funds for our community service projects. |

One of our major fundraisers is our annual fisherman’s day event. This is held the weekend after our national carnival festival. Most people see this event as a cool down from our biggest festival of the year, carnival. Many visitors come over from mainland St.Vincent to be a part of this event. This year’s activity will be held on Saturday 7th July, 2012. The one day event has grown over the past 15 years into the biggest fishing event on the calendar of island and remarkably for such a tiny island. The event sees fishermen taking to the sea as early as 1 o’ clock in the morning in many different categories; trolling, long line, seine, bottom line etc and return at 3pm. On the day fish is prepared in many different ways and serve with side dishes (fry, stew, boil, roast, etc). At the is also a solid bar and music to keep you going. At the end of the competition prizes are awarded to the fisherman with the heaviest catch in each category, the heaviest single catch/ fish, each boat also receives a token of appreciation for participating. |

RI PRESIDENT MAKES MEMBERSHIP A PRIORITYIt’s every Rotarian’s responsibility to boost club membership and ensure the future of Rotary. No member takes this duty more seriously than RI President Kalyan Banerjee. “The more members we have, the more Rotary can do,” Banerjee says. “Rotarians must refer new members. Our current annual growth is 5 percent, but if every two years each Rotarian brought in a new member, our membership would grow by 50 percent.” Despite a busy schedule, Banerjee continues to find potential members during his travels as RI president. “Today you can recruit anybody, anywhere,” he says. “I might meet someone on a flight to Los Angeles or Bangkok who would make a good member, and if I do, I refer that person.” Follow Banerjee’s example today by referring a family member, friend, or business associate. The online form has been updated, so it’s even easier now to refer a member. See how the Presidential Citation, Changemaker Award can help your club set tangible membership goals

The Strategic Plan is part of our Rotary DNAFebruary 2011This Rotary year features a culture of innovation in which we are looking at all aspects of our policies, practices, and procedures to see if they can be modernized and improved. Not surprisingly for an old and large organization like ours, we are identifying many areas that could, and should, be brought up to date. But at the same time, I fully recognize that some things are so significant in Rotary’s success that they are sacrosanct. They are referred to in the RI Strategic Plan as our core values, but I prefer to call them our DNA. They are the characteristics that distinguish Rotary from all other organizations. They are the essence of who Rotarians are and what Rotarians have in common around the world. The five core values named in the RI Strategic Plan are fellowship, service, integrity, diversity, and leadership. Young people prefer the word networking to our traditional word of fellowship, but to me they are equivalent. Both words lead to lasting friendships in our clubs, which keep us together between projects and which make Rotary membership truly priceless. Friendship is clearly the most essential element of Rotary’s DNA! Rotarians should not worry that the current emphasis on modernization will damage our core values. That would be alien to Cowboy Logic, which includes the admonitions “Remember that some things are not for sale” and “Know where to draw the line.” I want to assure Rotarians that we will not alter the values and attitudes that have made Rotary a premier organization – one that is now on the world stage through PolioPlus! We have so much to be proud of as Rotarians. This is our finest hour, and our best days are still ahead as we help our clubs to be Bigger, Better, and Bolder. Along with our five core values, persistent progress is another prestigious part of Rotary’s DNA! IPP RI |

ROLE OF THE IPP IN MAKING FOR A BETTER ROTARY CLUBMany IPPs are confronted by the dilemma of what to do after their year as President. The hectic period as President is over and now there is a lull. It is necessary for them to consider why Rotary International retains the IPP as a member of the club Board? In this regard I would like to share some thoughts prepared by PDG Dr Paul CK Lee on this subject with you. I have benefitted tremendously from the insights given by PDG Paul and I hope that you will too. The are many reasons why the IPP continues on as a member of the Rotary club Board. The more important reasons are as follows: 1. CONTINUITY OF CLUB PROJECTS Club projects very often may not be completed within one Rotary Year. The IPP plays an important role in ensuring that the projects are continued to be implemented properly and completed smoothly. It is important for the IPP to recognize that when a project goes into the next Rotary Year, the current President and Board have the right of decision making. The IPP must accept this and continue to support the new Board. 2. CONTINUITY OF PRESIDENTIAL & BOARD DECISIONS Very often the Board decisions of one Rotary Year need to be carried forward to the next Rotary year. The IPP plays the role of advising the Board on the merits of such decisions, as well as, whether fresh approvals from the current Board are required. 3. GUIDE PRESIDENT/BOARD ON PAST PRACTICES The IPP can play a vital role by providing for continuity on many issues by advising the Board on the past practices and the merits of each of these practices. The decision of whether to continue with such past practices rests with the current Board. See full document under DOWNLOADS ON YOUR LEFT |
